What to look for: Of course you should hire a licensed, insured and well established company, but here are some other helpful tips;
All interior piping should be done in copper. Improper installation of interior piping can lead to a catastrophic leak. The interior use of polyethelene pipe, under pressure, is never acceptable.
Beware of the "get it wet" approach of some contractors which does not consider such factors as uniform coverage, water requirements of plants and turf as well as soil type. Failure to address these issues can lead to overwatering, underwatering, waste of water, poor plant growth and the cost of corrective measures. If a system is not designed properly some areas may get too much water while others do not get enough. It can be very frustrating for the homeowner to run the system excessively in an attempt to water an area that gets poor coverage while literally flooding other areas.
Sprinkler heads should be evenly spaced and provide what is known as "head to head" coverage. This means that a sprinkler head should spray all the way to an adjoining head. This ensures that all areas are completey and evenly covered. Rotary heads, spray heads and drip systems apply water at various rates and should therefore be placed on separate zones. Whenever possible lawn and plants should also be zoned separately because lawns generally require more water than plants.
Piping should be sized based on the available water supply to ensure adequate pressure and proper coverage. Piping should be installed to a suitable depth using proper equipment. Poorly installed pipes can be easily damaged.
All electrical wiring should be UL approved for direct burial and all splices should be waterproof. Incorrect wiring can lead to system "shorts", system malfunction and premature equipment faliure.
Your installer should prepare an "as built" drawing showing the location of all major system components. This drawing will make it possible to locate underground components if repair or renovation is necessary. For example: installing a swimming pool or home extension, etc.
A rain sensor should be installed to prevent the system from operating in the rain. This will save water and help prevent overwatering.
When the installation is complete there should be no permanent damage to the landscape. Within several days, if not immediatley, there should be no visible signs that a system was installed.
